MEHINDI, MEHNDI OR HENNA

Mehndi is a form of body paint derived from the henna plant which is crushed and made into a paste.

Its use has traditionally been associated with weddings, where the bride and many women would adorn their hands with the paste piped into designs and left to dry.

In the past however, the use of mehndi was not limited to women.  As such, it was used to dye the beards and nails of pharaohs.  In the hot climates, henna or mehndi has also been used to cool the skin.

There is much symbolism with the art where each symbol stands for something different.

Birds are used to depict a messenger, while flowers represent love, happiness and growth and are most popularly used in wedding ceremonies.

    7. Why Do We Applying Mehendi/Henna On The Hand And Feet

    mehandi

Besides lending color to the hands, mehndi is a very powerful medicinal herb. Weddings are stressful, and often, the stress causes headaches and fevers. As the wedding day approaches, the excitement mixed with nervous anticipation can take its toll on the bride and groom. Application of mehndi can prevent too much stress because it cools the body and keeps the nerves from becoming tense. This is the reason why mehndi is applied on the hands and feet, which house nerve endings in the body.
